Bypass threat to Oakham restoration

The Melton & Oakham Waterways Society is contesting plans for a bypass that would sever the line of the Oakham Canal, preventing future restoration of the navigation. At short notice the government has offered Leicestershire County Council funding for the long-proposed Melton Mowbray Distributor Road, to skirt east of the town. MOWS chairman Mick Clowes said: "The bypass would cross the B676, the Oakham Canal and the River Eye all together at the Lag Lane Junction. The whole area would become a roundabout, so the line of the canal is now under threat."
