Our boat life began at Whitchurch back in 2014. We moved there because of its proximity to the Llangollen Canal and lived in a camper van while we looked for a narrowboat to buy. Once afloat, we spent our first two winters moored there and it became home. Then, in 2016, we began continuously cruising and didn't return until this spring. Whitchurch doesn't make as much of the canal as, say, Ellesmere does, which is a shame. The waterway runs a mile or so west of the town, amid ring roads and rich, undulant farmland. The Whitchurch Arm, where we moored, is only a fraction of its original length; it used to run all the way to town, but was filled in sometime in the 20th century. Unfortunately, much of the route now passes through housing estates and nature reserves, so a fully restored channel is unlikely. But Whitchurch Waterway Trust continues to push for further restoration.
