RIVER NENE

The navigable River Nene extends for 62 1/2 miles from the junction with the Northampton Arm to Dog-in-a-Doublet Tidal Lock below Peterborough, and is under the control of the Environment Agency. An astonishingly lovely river, between Northampton and Peterborough it flows through remarkably unspoilt countryside, the only other sizeable town being Wellingborough. The route is enhanced by a succession of pretty villages, many boasting welcoming country pubs and restaurants, with Wadenhoe and Fotheringhay being particularly pleasant, as is the delectable stone-built town of Oundle. Perhaps, though, the Nene's biggest appeal is its timeless landscape of water meadows and weathered mills.
