In recent years, considerable research effort has been expended to understand the impact of various forms of natural organic matter (NOM) on drinking water treatment processes. To characterise NOM, resin fractionation and high performance size exclusion chromatography (HPSEC) have proven to be useful tools, much simpler than organic chemistry methods They have become more accepted by treatment operators as methods for understanding treatment processes, in particular, the optimisation of pilot work prior to commencing new treatment schemes. Both techniques have been employed to determine the influence of environmental conditions and biodegradation on the character of the NOM, the efficiency of water treatment processes, the identification of NOM fractions recalcitrant to conventional treatment and investigation of the formation of disinfection by-products.
