Ballymena wastewater treatment extension

The existing bio-filter works Were Constructed at Spencestown in 1939 and subsequently extended with activated sludge plant. In 1992 a new primary, activated sludge and sludge digestion and thickening plant was built outside the urban area at Tullaghgarley, and treatment shared between the original Spencestown bio-filter plant and the new Tullaghgarley ASP. The Tullaghgarley works were planned to be constructed in two stages but delays in implementing the second stage resulted in severe overloading.
