INSTITUTIONS, POLICIES, AND TECHNOLOGIES FOR SUSTAINABLE WATERSHED MANAGEMENT IN THE ASIA-PACIFIC

Recent years have seen a significant increase in the demand for water in Hawaii and the Asia-Pacific Basin. Many factors account for this growth including burgeoning populations and higher water requirements for the industrial and residential sectors of this rapidly growing region. As the competition for water becomes more intense, institutions for sustainable watershed management are playing an increasingly visible and important role. AWRA's 2005 Spring Specialty Conference will focus on institutions, policies, and technologies for sustainable watershed management in the Asia-Pacific region. This conference builds on the results of recent successful conferences which emphasized water governance and management, including the Kyoto (Japan) ministerial World Water Forum in 2003 and the Dundee (Scotland) 2002 International AWRA Specialty Conference on Globalization and Water Management. Specifically, cultural and social aspects of water resources are emphasized (both biophysical ecology and political phenomena).
