Regional-scale hydrologic analyses are often implemented using ArcGIS because of the utility of the various tools within its Spatial Analyst extension, as well as its ArcHydro data model tools and Data East's XTools Pro. Operations on large files, however, are very time consuming. If numerous files representing time series are necessary, then attention to the operations can be overwhelming and tedious. To provide additional rigor, flexibility, and options for assessing hydrologic processes over very large areas (western United States) for very long time periods (monthly from 1895 through 2006), FORTRAN codes and Python scripts are implemented in the framework of MS-DOS batch files. This approach provides relatively attention-free operations and file processing with results that can be interpreted and analyzed using visualization, graphs, or spreadsheets.
