Water reuse has come a long way since the early days of non-potable reuse. Today, many engineered systems supply non-potable water for agronomic and high-end industrial use. Although potable reuse has been an important water supply strategy in arid regions for many years, climate change, increased water demand, and advances in technology also expanded potable reuse. Where multiple water-supply options exist, the current state of the water industry reflects a diverse water portfolio that often encompasses both non-potable and potable reuse. Communities that effectively practice reuse understand the importance of fit-for-purpose water and typically employ a variety of approaches and technologies tailored to their needs and goals.
