An autobiography of solid waste management

My wife and I celebrate our 50~(th) wedding anniversary this year. This milestone got me thinking about how the engineering and operations of solid waste management facilities have changed over my lifetime. (Yeah, I know, my wife won't appreciate the association between our marriage and trash, but I can't help it... solid waste is in my DNA.) Perhaps the steady improvement of solid waste handling since the mid-20th century in the USA, a developed country, can inspire developing countries to continue and even accelerate the modernisation of their waste management systems.
