The Chinese naval command areas during the period under discussion were in the order north to south: Peiyang, Nanyang, Fukien, and Kwang-tung/Canton. The spelling of names is that used for the same period and is usually self-evident. (See map) The Problem It has been difficult to build up an accurate picture of the Peiyang torpedo boat force present during the hostilities of the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895, due in part either to error or to lack of facts, and also because such facts as there were are spread sparsely over a number of documents.
