Doctored: The Medicine of Photography in Nineteenth-Century America

It has now been three decades since Peter Galassi pithily summarized the aim of Before Photography, his important, if polemical, exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York: "the object here is to show that photography was not a bastard left by science on the doorstep of art, but a legitimate child of the Western pictorial tradition" (p. 12). This event was the apotheosis of a particular history of photography that had itself been nourished by the ample cultural authority of MOMA.
