Industry has been exposed to on line partial discharge (PD) technology, related to generators and motors, for many years. Recently introduced continuous on line predictive relays have extended the applications to include switchgear and cable. Mittal Steel Vanderbijlpark has invested in such a system for the on-line analysis of MV switchgear. Initial results clearly indicate that partial discharge analysis of MV switchgear is an excellent on-line predictive maintenance tool. The results also show that the key factors in implementing an on line partial discharge predictive maintenance program are to trend and not base decisions on individual or absolute values, and to correlate partial discharge activity against operating dynamics (humidity and temperature in the case of switchgear).
