On April 10, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued the Final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) for Dominion Energy’s application for an additional 20 years of operation for Units 1 & 2 at the Surry nuclear power plant in southeast Virginia. In its determination, the NRC concluded that the potential environmental impacts are not great enough to prevent it from considering issuing the renewed licenses for the Surry nuclear power plant. The NRC staff said it will consider the final EIS and final Safety Evaluation Report when considering whether to issue the renewed licenses. The NRC’s subsequent license renewal process determines whether the licensee of an operating reactor can extend its license for an additional 20 years beyond the previously extended license. Dominion submitted the subsequent license renewal application on October 15, 2018 (UxW32-43), for the Surry reactors, located approximately 17 miles northwest of Newport News, Virginia. Under current licenses, Surry 1 & 2 can continue operating through 2032 and 2033, respectively. With renewed licenses, the units would be able to operate to 2052 and 2053, respectively.
