Although there are a good number of publications on topics of China's reform and the socialist country's transformation toward a "socialist market economy," it is still rare to have a book written by a Western scholar based on firsthand experience of living in a Chinese community. In Suburban Beijing: Housing and Consumption in Contemporary China, Friederike Fleischer, an anthropologist, shares his observations and comments on the transition of China's urban society via an analysis of Wangjing new development zone in suburban Beijing.
