PAUL Baay was born in 1962 in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, to an ExxonMobil landman before the family uprooted with his father's posting to Calgary, Alberta. There, he was raised and schooled in Canada's energy capital, known as Cowtown or 'Stampede City' because of its celebrated beef-cattle and rodeo tradition. After studying administration and commerce at the University of Western Ontario in London, Baay hastened back for his first job, a two-year stint with Orbit Oil & Gas, a seismic firm where he cut his teeth in the industry before joining his father's company, Remington Energy, where he stayed for 12 years. "I started off working the fields with Dad as he took on a 600 barrels per day field and got it pumping 24,000 bpd before selling out and retiring," Baay says. "So then I acquired a small field producing over 400 bpd and managed to raise output to 28,000 bpd before splitting up the asset for sale."
