$5.5 billion shaved off Alaska LNG project cost

THE developer of the proposed Alaska liquefied natural gas export facility has cut by $5.5 billion the cost estimate for the US project as the development faces an uncertain future amid weak market demand. Alaska Gasline Development, the state corporation taskedwith developing the Alaska LNG project, late last week said the project is now expected to cost $38.7 billion, compared to a previous forecast of $44.2 billion. Alaska Gas-line said it arrived at the new estimate following a "rigorous 14-month process incorporating significant third-party natural gas and LNG industry expertise". Participants in the process included representatives from supermajors BP and ExxonMobil as well as US engineering, procurement and construction contractor Fluor.
