NORWAY'S Equinor has signed a long-term charter with Oslo-listed Eidesvik Offshore that involves converting a platform supply vessel to be the first to run on carbon-free ammonia as part of a ground-breaking research project. By 2024, the Viking Energy vessel will have installed ammonia fuel cells with 2 megawatts of capacity to be tested for long-distance sailing under the five-year charter. The charter will start from April this year after its current contract with the state-controlled operator expires.
