THESE are tense times in Sudan, with opposition protesters agreeing to suspend strike action while talks resume over how to form a transitional sovereign council, waiting to see if the regime makes good on its promise to release political prisoners, writes Barry Morgan. Mediation by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali was initially rebuffed, with soldiers arresting dissidents and firing on civilians almost as soon as he departed, but it seems this week's return to dialogue can nonetheless be chalked up to his good offices.
