摘要

THAILAND goes to the polls on Sunday in a general election that is essentially seen as pitting the incumbent military government against populist parties linked to ousted former prime minister Thaksin Shina-watra and parties that stand against continuing military rule, writes Amanda Battersby. The junta, which has ruled Thailand since seizing power in a 2014 coup, is looking to bring back its leader, General Prayut Chan-o-cha, as prime minister in the 24 March polls via the Palang Prachart party. The military toppled pro-Thaksin governments with coups in 2006 and again five years ago when it overthrew the administration led by Thaksin's sister, Yingluck Shi-nawatra.
