A report released in September by EEF and Santander shows the UK as the eighth largest industrial nation, up from ninth place in 2016. Britain now has an annual output of $249bn, making it the third biggest manufacturing nation in Europe, behind only Germany and Italy. The sector accounts for 44% of UK exports and employs 2.6m people across the country. The North West produces more than £24bn of output, with the West Midlands (£17.5bn) and East Midlands (£15.9bn) also strong, due to their aerospace and automotive sectors.
