A rigid truck chassis and its body go together like....er, a horse and carriage. Yet no affair between a multinational truck manufacturer and a UK bodybuilder is ever going to develop into a marriage of equals. David Wilcox reports. Around three-quarters of the 55,000-odd trucks sold in the UK this year are imports - most of them built by the giants of the world's automotive manufacturing industry. About 20,000 of these vehicles are tractive units, but the remaining 35,000 need bodies. Enter the UK bodybuilding industry, with vital statistics that could hardly be more unlike those of vehicle manufacturing. The vast majority of these bodies are built in Britain by small businesses, many of which are still family-owned. Few relationships are more intimate than that between a truck chassis and its body. So how on earth do two such disparate manufacturing groups manage to hit it off so well?
