The BPM system is orthogonal to the IT infrastructure. That is, the IT infrastructure can and does exist without a BPM system, and vice versa. Neither depends on the other, in much the same way that an auto designer's CAD/CAM system does not depend on an IT infrastructure. Auto designers don't deal with the technical plumbing of IT systems, they deal with car frames, engines, wheels and so on. Ditto for business analysts who want to deal directly with business processes.
