Cork: City and County (The Buildings of Ireland)

Before Nikolaus Pevsner's death in 1983, Alistair Rowan, Professor of Art History at University College Dublin, succeeded in bringing the Buildings of England series across the sea to Ireland. That initiative, to date, has resulted in five volumes, all published by Yale University Press. In tandem with the 'National Inventory of Architectural Heritage' (funded by the Irish government), The Buildings of Ireland, even as a work in progress, now begins to provide for the first time a comprehensive record of Ireland's buildings of note. While the NIAH records only buildings built after 1700, the Irish Pevsners include buildings from earlier centuries. The fifth and most recent volume, Frank Keohane's Cork: City and County, sees the series extend southwards into Munster, a province rich in fine historic buildings.
