Design of non-reactor nuclear safety related structures, system and components at reactor sites and other nuclear facilities have undergone considerable change and new development over the past 10 years. The first such change and development was the publication of DOE Std. 1020, "Natural Phenomena Hazards Design and Evaluation Criteria for Department of Energy Facilities," in 1994 and its Rev. 1 in 1996. This was followed by the NRC's revision of Regulatory Guide 1.143, "Design Guidance for Radioactive Waste Management System, Structures and Components Installed in Light-Water Cooled Nuclear Power Plants," Rev. 2 in 2001 as well as the revision to DOE Std. 1020 in 2002. Also, in preparation are load designations and design rules for RISC-3 Category Structures, Systems and Components, SSC as defined in the new 10CFR50.69 which are different from the old Seismic Category 1 classification rules used in the past for nuclear safety related SSC at reactor facilities. Finally, a new ANS 2.26, "Categorization of Nuclear Facility Structures, Systems and Components for Seismic Design," Standard and ASCE, "Seismic Design Criteria for Structures, Systems and Components in Nuclear Facilities and Commentary," Standard on Seismic Design of Nuclear Facilities intended to implement the ANS 2.26 Standard has been completed by the ASCE technical working group. It is currently undergoing consensus review and approval for publication by the American Society of Civil Engineers as a consensus Standard in the near future.
