Fort St. Vrain Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation License Renewal

The Fort St. Vrain (FSV) Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation (ISFSI), built by Public Service Company of Colorado for safe interim onsite dry storage of spent fuel removed from the Fort St. Vrain High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor (HTGR), is unique in that it is the only ISFSI of its design in the United States. Its only sister facility is at the Paks Nuclear Power Plant in Hungary. The FSV ISFSI was licensed by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in November 1991 for a period of twenty years. The license was transferred to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in June 1999. The DOE Idaho Operations Office (DOE-ID) contracted operation of the FSV ISFSI through the Idaho National Laboratory. Following preliminary guidance from the NRC, the incumbent contractor developed a license renewal application for the FSV ISFSI which DOE-ID submitted to the NRC in November 2009 [1].a NRC license renewal approval is anticipated in May 2011.
