Nuclear thermal propulsion is an obvious choice for a deep space exploration mission, the need for reducing travel time is necessary to cut the cost of other logistics such as food and water and the space needed to supply a longer journey.~14 NTP also has the unique advantage of being able to abort and return home at any time, while a comparable chemical system will have to complete the planned mission path to execute a return trip. Nuclear thermal propulsion technology in space has many opportunities to fill a niche that has yet to be defined, whether that niche is realized is up to the people in charge.
