UTMC-lookin beyond demonstration

Urban traffic managers are called upon to deliver a wide range of policies and services such as reducing congestion, sustaining air quality, providing priority for public transport and providing real-time traffic and travel information. An increasing range of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) can help them achieve these. Successful and efficient ITS deployment requires new skills, a constructive and dynamic relationship with suppliers, and good operational practices and there is growing interest in using the UTMC framework as the de facto integration platform: To assist local authorities gain the most from ITS, the UK Department for Transport (DfT) initiated the six-year, ￡6M Urban Traffic Management and Control (UTMC) programme in 1997. Since then the programme has: 1. developed a clear set of technical recommendations; 2. supported four major implementations, as well as assisting a number of other interested local authorities; 3. worked collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders in the public and private sectors; and 4. facilitated the gradual hand over of the UTMC technical standards and day to day management of UTMC related activities to the UTMC Development Group (UDG). The UDG is a body representing UK towns and cities and suppliers, with the remit to steer the future direction of UTMC. DfT will continue to provide the UDG with support in this process.
