In 2005-06, EuroRAP (the European Road Assessment Programme) was active in 15 European countries and work was being planned in a further eight. Risk mapping was completed in nine countries, with performance tracking of roads in four of these and the EuroRAP Road Protection Score star rating also used in nine. This paper summarises data from the latest EuroRAP technical report, assesses issues related to accident-traffic flow relationships and highlights key findings, applications and opportunities. Variations in accident rate distributions across Europe can be used to indicate where crash rates are more heavily influenced by infrastructure design rather than other contributory factors. EuroRAP's techniques to assess road design and crash protection correlate with average fatal and serious crash rates.
