According to Katie Melua there are nine million bicycles in Beijing and although that figure may be disputed there is no doubt that the emphasis on the city's daily transportation has shifted in recent years from two wheels to four. Preparations for the Beijing 2008 Games as well as China's emergence as a major industrial nation have prompted construction on an unprecedented scale to the extent that coal and cement have had to be imported and supplies of cranes for essential building work exhausted.
