Why we need smarter solutions

Good morning. It's a pleasure to be here today in Birmingham - especially as it gives me a chance to get a good look at some of the new technologies and hardware being developed under the general banner of Intelligent Transport Systems. Safety, congestion management, multi-modal freight systems, smartcards, privacy, and realtime passenger information systems... to name but a few. It's good to see such interest being generated in these areas. It's important too, because we will need to keep developing intelligent transport systems across all these fields if we want keep people, goods and services moving smoothly in a rapidly growing economy.
