A Smarter Choices approach to developing Public Bike Schemes

This brief paper looks at using Smarter Choices techniques that have been developed to understand how to influence travel behaviour to help design, implement and subsequently operate a PBS. By developing the scheme in the context of a wider Smarter Choices strategy it isrnconsidered that there is a higher probability thatrnan effective and sustainable scheme can berndesigned.rnThe presentation provides a brief description ofrnPBS projects developed to date, including casernstudies of a number of different types of schemernin operation in Europe, before looking at the steps necessary to design an effective scheme. The steps identified are linked to a behaviour change model to show how this can help contribute to the changes in travel behaviour that are required for a PBS to be successful.
