In November 2009, the TVJSU submitted its ￡60 million Tees Valley Bus Network Improvements scheme business case for approval to the DfT. The aim is to raise bus rider-ship by 7% by 2016 with a co-ordinated package of bus priority, stop infrastructure (including RTPI) and journey enhancements on 20 radial corridors The Unit sees it as having an essential role to play in reversing a recent annual average 3% drop in bus ridership and reducing the levels of car reliance that are currently impacting on the roads network as a result of inadequate public transport provision.
