The FREEFLOW project aims to change our approach to transport data, by using it to generate what we call transport intelligence. Currently traffic authorities are collecting more (and better) data about our transport networks, such as journey times but users need to often know what the data actually means and what they should do about it. This is true for individual travellers and service suppliers as well as network operators and travel information providers. However, present techniques for handling data are often insufficient to help actively manage transport. Instead, users and managers often just react to network problems. Both the travelling public and those responsible for managing networks want new intelligence to help them make better decisions - instead of being told about a queue, drivers want to know how to avoid it and network managers want to know how to control it.
