Traffic managers and operators today must manage information on the current status of the road network from a variety of disparate sources, analyse the data received and then implement a coordinated strategic response. All of this is undertaken under continual pressure on budgets and resources to demonstrate maximum efficiency of publicrnexpenditure. In Barnsley, traffic levels grew over 23% in a ten year period from 1993-2003 and in the next 20 years are predicted to grow by at least a further 25%. The deployment of an innovative UTMC solution combining SCOOT signal control and variable message signs has provided an automatic queue relocation system on strategic routes through the town, alongside real time information to drivers without any operator intervention. The solution uses standard components which are readily available to provide a sustainable solution which does not require any additional on-street infrastructure to effectively manage congestion and minimise the impact of increasing traffic levels within the town.
