Intersections act as an important links on the road network. Usually, they accommodate the different directional movements of flow with respect to all kinds of motorised and non-motorised traffic. Due to these factors, intersections are exposed to road accidents and vehicular delay. The traffic control systems, particularly for a signalised intersection, play a vital role in not causing delay to the road users. The signal operation characteristics for signalised intersections are site specific and are a function of the traffic volume and the directional split of the traffic flow. This study focuses on understanding different signal operating characteristics under various traffic flow conditions. The breakeven point of the intersection to change from one operating system to the other has been estimated through this paper's study based on the ground data collected. The paper also assesses the change in vehicular volume resulting in vehicular delay and level of service together with the change in the operating conditions. An empirical model was developed, estimating the relationship between the vehicular delay with cycle time and vehicular flow and the same has been validated.
