London has a rapidly growing population, with over 10 million people expected to live in the capital by 2026. As a result of this rise in population, the use of public transport has also increased drastically. TfL created a programme to make buses more reliable and develop methods to prioritise them at junctions to enable a smoother journey. This was achieved using traffic signal technology and as part of the annual traffic signal review programme.
