Anti-ram protective device for protection against vehicles driving into metro stations

The purpose of this research paper is to solve the problem of protecting metro stations against motor vehicles entering their territories and to protect people from trauma. Motor vehicles have been driven into metro stations in many countries including France, Russia, Belarus, Belgium, Italy, etc. Sometimes this results in fatalities or injuries, we have systematized statistics on cases of vehicles driving into metro stations around the world and suggest a resolution for this problem. The development of an anti-ram protective device (bollard) capable of blocking vehicles driving into stations could serve as such a resolution. Firstly, we substantiated the specific character of metros including its infrastructural, technological and legal features and on this basis formulated five requirements the developed device must meet. Taking into consideration the formulated requirements we have developed a protective device capable of protecting metro stations against the intrusion of passenger cars, off-road vehicles with high clearance, trucks and motorbikes. We have also determined the optimal location of anti-ram protective devices near metro stations. Based on the analysis of the minimal dimensions of existing cars we have also calculated the minimum permissible distance between installed protective. Results: The experiment conducted has shown that an anti-ram protective device can block a truck weighing 20 tons driving at 40 km/h in case of its entering the territory of a metro stations. Equipping territories around metro stations with the developed anti-ram protective devices will resolve the problem of protecting metro stations against motor vehicles entering their territories and will protect people from trauma.
