In recent years, reducing fuel consumption has become a worldwide task for saving resources and also for reducing CO_2 emissions to suppress global warming. TOYOTA has been attempting to reduce fuel consumption by means of lean-burn engines. To improve this technology further, we have developed a new direct-injection gasoline engine (TOYOTA D-4) that makes possible ultra-lean burn (stratified-charge combustion) by injecting fuel directly into the cylinder with much lower pumping and cooling losses. In December 1996, TOYOTA brought a 2.0-liter model D-4 engine onto the market. The D-4 engine uses high-precision electronic control for stable stratified-charge combustion over a wide operating range. This paper describes the control system.
