Toyota succeeded in launching an electric vehicle, which had sufficient performances for practical use, into the market in September, 1996. One of the most important issues in the development process was the motor control technology and the key points in development were as follows: (1) Establishment of algorithm to maximize the motor's performances, (2) Configuration of hardware to realize accurate motor control, (3) Adaptive control to satisfy vehicle requirements such as driveability, (4) Establishment of fail-safe function. We describe key technologies of controlling the motor on vehicle. These technologies were developed both in design process to satisfy characteristic and specific requirements of the motor, and in evaluation using benches and actual vehicles.
