Over the last two decades, the concept of mixed use has assumed a ubiquitous place in UK - and international - planning policy, associated with a host of qualities that enrich the urban experience. Informed by a slew of governmental initiatives in response to mounting environmental concerns, mixed use has become synonymous with 'sustainable' development and 'smart growth', Advocates argue that combining functions in a building, block or district mitigates emissions by reducing the need to travel and also generates greater social and economic vitality than can be achieved by separating land uses.
