Bracewell and Drace-Francis's edited book "Balkan Departures Travel Writing from Southeastern Europe" offers six discussions and analyses on travel writings. The book opens with an introduction written by Bracewell explaining the main thrust of the book and the contents of the ensuing chapters.rnAccording to Bracewell the Balkans has been a region where people (other Europeans) have travelled to, and the travel writings emanating from these travelogues have somehow helped the development of an image of the Balkans. It is felt that Bracewell is somewhat resentful to this created image by the European travel writers which contains notions of being exotic, primitive and violent, as opposed to the image of the West proper as modern, progressive, and rational.
