NEW FOREST POLICY INITIATIVE FOR ASIA-PACIFIC

Despite continuing commitments and declarations avowing the protection and sustainable management of national forest cover within the Asia-Pacific region, the extent and quality of the forests continues to decline. This begs the question of why success in preserving and managing forests has been so elusive, and specifically, what role policy plays in this equation?rnIn response to this, FAO, the Philippines Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Asia-Pacific Forestry Commission jointly organized the second expert consultation on Establishing an Asia-Pacific Forest Policy "Think Tank," 16-17 August 2007, in Manila, Philippines. The meeting was attended by participants from governments, academia, research, civil society and international organizations in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.
