Conflict is often an inevitable part of natural resource management, as local communities, NGOs, governments and companies frequently have very different views as to how resources should be managed and utilized. Such disputes, if unresolved, can result in a number of negative consequences, such as environmental degradation, the disruption or failure of projects, the weakening and undermining of livelihoods, and violence. Forestry and natural resource professionals are increasingly being called upon to mediate among various stakeholders in conflict situations.
