Sociotechnical urbanism: new systems ergonomics perspectives on land use planning and urban design

Land use planning and urban design is in need of disruption. Theoryrnand practice have been caught in a cyclical process of reflection andrnreview, without significant change, for more than half a century. Thisrnrequired disruption is not technological, but methodological, and willrnprovide an opportunity for the optimisation of urban developmentrnand city form. Land use planning and urban design have not had therntools to manage the complexity and often competing priorities thatrnare presented in urban development. Here it is argued thatrnergonomics science and sociotechnical systems understandings ofrnurbanism provide new, and necessary, ways forward for the designrnand development of our cities and towns. Sociotechnical urbanismrnwill allow for multidisciplinary perspectives and empirical evaluationrnof the complex interactions between humans, technology andrnartefacts within modern urban environments.
