Driving in the night is significantly more dangerous and it cannot besolely attributed to reduced visibility or sleep deprivation. It is also dueto circadian changes in human cognitive performance. Semi-automateddriving is slowly entering the market and is predicted to improve drivingsafety; however, it might also introduce new types of challenges. Thereis a paucity of research on the circadian influences on semi-automateddriving. This work proposes an extended, multi-period, Consensus Modelof the driver that includes circadian rhythmicity in semi-automated driving.The basis for the multi-period Consensus Model is the interpolationof the data from manual driving, and literature related to the circadianeffect on the factors from the Consensus Model of the driver in automation.The results of the literature review stress the importance of circadianrhythmicity inclusion in research on vehicle automation.
