Burhan is 26 years old and comes from Turkey. For the last 2 years he has been working for Babtie Group's Nuclear Division, Manchester. After completing a batchelor's degree in civil engineering at Dumlupinar University, Turkey he moved to UMIST to undertake a master's degree in structural engineering. In his presentation he discussed the experimental results of a study of reinforced concrete beams to establish the effectiveness of confinement reinforcement on the beam curvature ductility. He covered the ability of ferro-cement to improve the crack behaviour of ductile reinforced concrete members and focused on the composite behaviour of the ferro-cement matrix and reinforcement to achieve greater deflection capacity. This is an important factor in earthquake resistant design.
