Comalco alumina refinery - large project development in the central Queensland region of Australia

The Central Queensland region of Australia has a temperate climate with an economic base primarily focused towards heavy industry. This paper provides an overview of the Comalco Alumina Refinery (CAR) project located at Gladstone, Queensland, Australia. Stage 1 of 3 proposed stages is currently under construction and is scheduled for mechanical completion in November 2004. Specific areas addressed are the scale of the full development, engineering design and construction aspect, and the accelerated construction programme using a pre-assembly and barging programme. Underlying all this is the project's commitments to safety, the environment and community relations.
