Tom Lennon describes a new BRE report on major changes in fire design which looks at the background BS 8110 Fire Design to ensure that important lessons from the past are recorded and to help define the strategy for a new generation of codes and standards. As part of a study commissioned jointly by the British Cement Association (BCA) and the Concrete Centre, the Building Research Establishment (BRE) was asked to investigate the background to the provisions for the fire design of concrete structures. A report has been prepared and published by BRE. The report provides information on the major changes in fire design from the publication of the 1948 version of CP 114 to the current provisions of the relevant parts of BS 8110.
