In my Presidential Address on 'Structural engineering - a passport to travel', (5 October issue of The Structural Engineer) I spoke of my journey as a structural engineer involving many interesting people, places and projects. My journey is now coming to an end and what an experience it has been! The President's year of office may only last 12 months according to the calendar but it feels like a lifetime's experience. I have had the privilege to travel to many exotic and far-flung places, see some incredible projects, and most importantly, meet many enthusiastic and interesting people. In my address I also likened the Institution to a ship that had been recently re-fitted and was ready to sail off into the wider world and possibly into some uncharted waters. Well, we have explored some new areas and responded to the inevitable challenges, but importantly we are still afloat and staying on the course set by our predecessors in our strategic plan, An Institution for 2010. Rather than undergo dramatic change, the Institution is continually evolving and progressing and we have made several significant advances this year particularly in regard to our stated objective that: The Institution will be acknowledged internationally as the pre-eminent body promoting high standards of structural engineering'.
