Innovative engineering design has been utilised to deliver the Putrajaya Convention Centre - a spectacular new iconic structure for Malaysia which won its teams from SKM Outstanding Achievement Awards from the Institution of Engineers Malaya. The Putrajaya Convention Centre is in Precinct 5 of the Federal Administration Centre of Putrajaya, about 25km from Kuala Lumpur. The RM630M (£90M) building is situated on the top of 'Puncak Selatan' and has a commanding view of the Boulevard. Two Sinclair Knight Merz Group companies, Perunding Mahir Bersatu Sdn Bhd (PMB) and Sinclair Knight Merz Engineering Sdn Bhd (SKM) were responsible for the civil and structural engineering of the project. The two firms picked up Outstanding Achievement Awards for their work on the Project at the 2005 Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) Engineering Excellence Awards. Putrajaya Holding Sdn Bhd had to complete the Centre in time for the 10th Organisation of Islam Conference (OIC) in October 2003. This necessitated a 22 month design and build contract. The brief required not only a state-of-the art, world class conference centre, but also an icon building that would become a landmark for the country, particularly as it was sited atop the highest hill is the Federal Administration Centre of Putrajaya.
